What is TIFF?

TIFF is an acronym for Tag(ged) Image File Format. It is one of the most popular and flexible of the current public domain raster file formats. It is the file format used for fax, data archive systems and on-line display applications.

Has e-mail replaced fax?

Many people believe that e-mail and the Internet will replace fax. Consider this. In the year 2000, more than 300 billion fax pages were sent around the globe. Clearly fax has advantages over e-mail.

  • It is a universal standard understood around the world.
  • There is never a compatibility problem.
  • It is reliable throughout the world.
  • It is relatively inexpensive.
  • It is easy to send a fax either in the hard copy form from a fax machine or from your desktop using computer aided tools.
  • Document formats are retained and they are un-editable. This is an excellent method of distributing contracts, purchase orders and invoices for example.
  • Faxes are legally binding and e-mail isn't.
Fax will remain a primary method of sending documents for decades to come.

Is TIFF only used for fax?

Certainly not. Because a TIFF file is un-editable, it is often the preferred file format for document storage systems. "From the currently available formats TIFF is the one that can be considered most "archival." It is a very versatile, platform-independent, and open file format, and it is being used in most digitizing projects as the format of choice for the digital masters." The TIFF Group 3 and Group 4 formats are very efficient for document storage.

What is an electronic document?

An electronic document is a digital picture of the original paper document. When a piece of paper - contract, memo or invoice - is run through a scanner or converted to TIFF using a print capture driver an electronic image of the document is made similar to an image made by a digital camera.

What is a fax server?

A fax server is a shared fax resource installed on a LAN or multi-user computer network. It is typically installed on a gateway PC or file server and enables network users to:
  • Send computer files as faxes to any fax machine or device in the world; and,
  • Receive faxes from any fax machine or device in the world and be routed to either to a fax machine or a unified messaging mailbox.

What does a fax server consist of?

Besides the computer platforms they run on (e.g., NT/2000, UNIX, self-contained/turnkey), fax servers consist of:
  • Communication software;
  • One or more fax modems, boards or fax machines;
  • End user interface software - fax client software, e-mail clients and unified messaging clients (this is where the Imager products fit in!); and,
  • Management software for the fax server administrator.

Why use fax servers?

The key benefit of using a fax server is that users can send and receive faxes from their desktops rather than having to walk to a fax machine. Also, a fax server enables some faxing applications to be fully automated. For example, sales contracts, purchase orders and invoices can be automatically faxed from the computer application. They can also provide the ability to broadcast the same fax message to a list of fax addresses.

What Fax Server components does Imager provide?

Metasoft provides the fax server companies with the end user software components necessary to create and view TIFF files.

Which fax boards are compatible with the Imager solutions?

The imager products support a variety of fax boards including:
Do you support SUN and UNIX systems?

The majority of documents are prepared in a Windows environment. We will continue to focus our efforts on the Windows platform. However, it is important to note that once a TIFF file is created, it can be route to a UNIX machine supported on the network.

How fast are your conversion tools?

Metasoft's TIFF conversion tools are fast and reliable. On average our software converts a standard Word document at the rate of one page per second once the native application is loaded. This equates to approximately 60 pages a minute, 3,600 pages an hour and 86,000 pages in a 24 day. This throughput can be improved by distributing the load on more than 1 processor.

Why would I use your Folder-2-Folder service instead of a print capture driver?

TIFF conversions are CPU intensive. The F2F service off-loads the task from the client machines to a single processor capable of providing the service in the background.

Why must native applications be installed?

Many Windows applications use file formats that are proprietary and subject to change with each new release. Use of the original application (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point) to convert the document provides the most reliable and accurate result and also allows new formats to be supported as soon as the application becomes available, rather than waiting for third party software providers to update their conversion products.

Do You Provide Source Code?

Source code licenses are available for all of our software components. If you are only concerned about the security of your investment, we also provide escrow arrangements.

How long can I try your demo for?

Our demos do not have a time limit. We want you to be certain our products meet your needs. Evaluate them as long as you need to and ask us for help at any time.
